Filling out Your Inline Metadata

When using the Cascade CMS, please follow the proper inline metadata protocols explained below. This article includes what metadata is and information you will need to fill out your inline metadata—both the required fields and the optional fields.

Inline Metadata Location

In the Cascade CMS, the inline metadata can be found at the very top of the “edit” pop-up window.

What Is Metadata?

To put it short:  metadata is information (or data) about information. It is not displayed on the page, but it is machine parsable. It can be used by browsers to figure out how to display content or reload a page; by search engines in indexing and providing keywords or descriptions; or other web services.

Below is a full description of what the Cascade CMS require for each of your pages.

  • Display Name:  the short name of the Asset, distinct from the page name that is displayed on the site tree. This name should be what you want to show up in the left navigation on the live site, as shown below.

  • Title:  the title of the Asset. This defines the title in the browser toolbar, provides a title for the page when it is bookmarked or favorited, and displays a title for the page in search-engine results.
    • Note:  the Cascade CMS automatically adds a “| Chapman University” at the end of your title. Make sure to add your department or college name to provide more information for your users. For example:

  • Keywords:  words or phrases about the Asset. This is used for search engine optimization.
  • Description:  the description of the Asset. Provide a concise explanation of the web page’s content. This is often displayed on search engine results pages, including the Chapman search bar.
  • Hide From Navigation:  checking this box will hide your page from the left navigation on the live site. This does not mean your page will be unpublished—the page will still exist, but it will lack a button in that left navigation.
    • Note:  users may still be able to find this page by using the Chapman search bar.
  • Hide From Search: checking this box will hide your page from the Chapman search on the live site. Again, this does not mean your page will be unpublished—the page will still exist, and anyone who has the URL will still be able to visit.
