Domains, URLs, Shortcuts, Redirects and QR Codes

Chapman University follows specific guidelines and patterns for web addresses and URL aliases. Please read through the information below to learn about the options you have.

Chapman Domains

Description:

This is the core part of a website’s web address. For example, Chapman’s domain is chapman.edu. You will see this domain all throughout our Chapman websites.

Guidelines:

  • The Chapman domain cannot be adjusted.
  • All websites that are officially connected to Chapman should use the chapman.edu domain. Many third party systems allow for Chapman to map our domain to their website.
  • Work with SMC to connect the chapman.edu domain to your web environment.

Subdomains

Description:

This is a piece of additional information added to the beginning of a website’s domain name. It is used to create a distinct URL path for a new website environment. For example, news.chapman.edu  or events.chapman.edu are subdomains that lead to our newsroom and events calendar, respectfully.

Guidelines:

  • Subdomains are limited to unique Chapman website environments, not for web sections within a website.
    • For example, news.chapman.edu is the subdomain for our newsroom, but the magazine page within that environment is news.chapman.edu/magazine (with the section at the end)
  • Subdomains are not to be used as a url shortcut for an existing websites. Please see below for URL shortcut information.
  • All subdomain requests need to feed through SMC and IS&T for approval based on the guides listed on this page.
